Eczema Awareness Month: It’s Time to Take Action

This year’s Eczema Awareness Month centered on taking care of our whole selves. We hope you found some time to do just that.

With all this talk about eczema and mental health, we can’t help but get a little emotional knowing there are people like you who work so hard to make a difference in the world. Thanks so much to our eczema community for participating in Eczema Awareness Month these past few weeks!

Now let’s end October on high note, shall we? But first, a recap:

During Week 1, we talked about how people living with eczema are at a higher risk for experiencing depression, anxiety and stress. We know that eczema affects our emotional well-being in obvious ways, such as dealing with the constant pain and itch, being self-conscious about the appearance of our skin, feeling frustrated when treatment options fail, and countless other ways.

But what about the less obvious ways? During Week 2, we explored the science between inflammation and mental health. We introduced you to Dr. Charles Raison, professor in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health’s Department of Psychiatry, who discussed the science behind our body’s inflammatory response and how that plays a direct role in our emotional well-being.

For Week 3, we asked Dr. Raison to give us five tips for improving our mood and reducing inflammation. These included practicing mindful meditation, increasing our amount of exercise each week, doing our best to get enough sleep and strengthening our social connections.

Now that we know how important it is to put time and attention into boosting our mental health, it’s time to TAKE ACTION.

For Week 4, we’re asking our friends in the eczema community to help the National Eczema Association by taking the following steps:

  1. Donate! Donations to NEA will have an immediate impact on the lives of individuals and families challenged day after day with eczema.

  2. Raise Your Voice for Eczema! Tell your public officials that eczema is an important public health issue and that you support NEA.
    Read how eczema advocate Abagail Llewellyn’s efforts led to her state legislature to pass a bill officially declaring October as Eczema Awareness Month.
  3. Share this blog post and other Eczema Awareness Month content on your social media pages, tagging @nationaleczema and #eczemamonth.
  4. Join our virtual Itching for a Cure walk today and raise money for eczema education and research.
  5. Eczema Awareness Month Facebook FramePost on social media about your eczema journey with mental health. Share photos, words, and stories, and tag @nationaleczema, #eczemamonth, #unhideeczema, and #bewellmindandbody in your posts.
  6. Add NEA’s Eczema Awareness Month frame to your Facebook profile picture (search “eczema” in frames)
  7. Join the conversation on October 31st, when we’ll have a live Facebook Chat with experts from National Institutes for Health (NIH), National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS, and other partners.
  8. Download Johnson & Johnson’s Donate a Photo app and donate one photo a day to help protect a child with eczema from bullying
