Research Priorities and Current Efforts

The National Eczema Association is a leader in the field of eczema research and science. Learn about our key research areas and ongoing work.

How we advance eczema research

The National Eczema Association (NEA) is a key player in the field of eczema research and science. As the only nonprofit in the United States dedicated solely to eczema, NEA actively works to improve the health and quality of life of the 31.6 million Americans with some form of eczema.

Through our multi-pronged research strategy, we actively work to better understand this skin disease, accelerate better care options and treatments and improve the day-to-day lives of patients and families trying to manage all types of eczema.

To achieve these goals, NEA focuses on the following key research areas:

  • In-house eczema research
  • Funding eczema research
  • Eczema tracking app
  • Research collaborations

Key research priorities

In-house eczema research

NEA has a team of scientists actively conducting studies to gather insights into the range of physical, emotional and financial burdens of eczema, as well the changing eczema care and treatment experience. The results from these studies are published in open access medical journals to help improve eczema care.

Funding eczema research

NEA has been the leading nonprofit funder of eczema research for more than 20 years. Since awarding our first grant in 2004, we have awarded over $4.4 million to date. Plus, NEA-funded research has been cited more than 5,500 times to date.

Eczema tracking app

NEA created EczemaWise, an app to help eczema patients better manage and control their condition. Each user, and the information they track about their eczema symptoms and treatments, is part of a research registry. Their data is anonymized and used by NEA researchers to make advances in eczema research.

Research collaborations

NEA partners with various patient advocacy organizations, medical professionals, researchers, universities, government agencies, policymakers and drug manufacturers on eczema research projects and initiatives.
