Managing chronic hand eczema (CHE) is a daily commitment that goes far beyond treating an occasional flare-up. For Alicia Clark, a 37-year-old biomedical scientist from Chesapeake, VA, managing the condition has been a lifelong reality since age five.

Protecting the Skin Barrier Every Day

Managing CHE isn’t just about treating a flare; it’s about learning how to protect the skin barrier every single day. Over the years, Alicia has found that consistency is key. Her daily routine revolves around heavy, regular hydration, layering Vaseline, water-based lotions and natural shea butter throughout the day to lock in moisture. Because tap water can be harsh on sensitive skin, she also recommends installing home water filters to help soften the water coming out of taps and reduce daily irritation.

Working with Her Dermatologist During Flares

During severe CHE flare-ups, prescription topical steroid creams and ointments remain an essential tool for Alicia. However, she always works closely with her dermatologist to use them strictly as directed, keeping long-term usage in mind to gradually reduce reliance on steroids over time.

A Scientist’s Favorite Nighttime Tip

Being a biomedical scientist gives Alicia an extra layer of curiosity when it comes to practical skin care. One of her favorite hand eczema management tips came from an allergist colleague of hers.

“I remember talking to a colleague who recommended wearing medical-grade nitrile gloves on my hands at night,” Alicia recalls. “Slipping on nitrile gloves overnight during a bad flare helps seal in topical moisturizers for hours, soothes open skin wounds and acts as a physical shield against friction while sleeping.”

Looking Ahead with Hope

Looking ahead, Alicia is encouraged by new innovations coming out for eczema care.

Living with chronic hand eczema requires patience, trial and error and a strong partnership with your healthcare provider. Finding what works takes time, but small daily adjustments can make a world of difference.
