Drug Maker Patient Assistance Programs

Drug maker patient assistance programs (PAPs) are set-up by drug companies to offer free or low-cost drugs to those who cannot afford their medication. Companies offer these programs voluntarily, meaning the government does not require them to provide free medicine. As a result, each program has its own rules.

Nonprofit Programs to Help with Prescriptions

Here are a few nonprofit organizations that offer various services or tools to help with the costs of medications.

  • Benefits Checkup is a free service from the National Council of Aging (NCOA) that helps elderly patients find cost savings on prescriptions.
  • NeedyMeds connects people to prescription assistance programs from your state and/or local government.
  • Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation helps people with chronic diseases, including atopic dermatitis, pay for prescriptions.
  • PhRMA’s Medicine Assistance Tool (MAT) is a search engine designed to help patients, caregivers and healthcare providers learn more about the resources available through the various biopharmaceutical industry programs.
  • RX Outreach is a nonprofit pharmacy that provides affordable medications.
  • The Assistance Fund (TAF) helps patients and families, including those with atopic dermatitis, by providing financial assistance for the cost of treatment and other health-related services.

Government Programs for Health Coverage & Prescriptions

There are various federal and state programs available to help with both insurance coverage and prescription costs.

  • Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) provides low-cost health coverage to children in families that earn too much money to qualify for Medicaid.
  • State Healthcare Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free health benefits counseling services for Medicare beneficiaries and their families or caregivers.
  • Medicaid is a state and federal program that provides health coverage if you have a low income.
  • Medicare is a federal program that provides health coverage if you are 65 or older or have a severe disability, no matter your income.
  • Medicare’s Prescription Drug Program can provide extra help with the cost of prescription drugs if you qualify and are a Medicare beneficiary.
  • Medicare Savings Program can help pay some or all of your Medicare premiums, deductibles and coinsurance if you have limited income and resources.
