Everyday tasks like washing dishes or petting a dog are simple routines most people never think twice about. But for Wyoming-based Jessica Vredenburg, living with Chronic Hand Eczema (CHE) means every touch requires thoughtful planning.

Small Adjustments, Big Impact

Living with CHE affects nearly every aspect of daily life. For Jessica, routine tasks require subtle yet significant adjustments. To protect her hands from excess moisture and harsh soaps, Jessica uses a long-handled brush instead of a traditional sponge for washing dishes. To prevent skin from drying further, she limits washing to just her fingertips rather than scrubbing her full hands.

“I Am Much More Than My Skin”

“I am much more than my skin,” said Jessica, reflecting on her daily mindset. “Learning self-acceptance and taking small precautions, like staying mindful of every material my hands touch, has helped me find balance through the flares.” Avoiding direct contact with animal fur and choosing gentle, barrier-friendly materials are essential precautions Jessica takes to prevent painful flares.

The Emotional Weight of Visible Hands

Beyond physical discomfort, CHE carries a substantial emotional weight. Because our hands are always on display during social interactions, managing visible red, irritated patches can lead to deep self-consciousness and feelings of vulnerability. Over time, Jessica has found balance through dietary adjustments, material awareness and a focus on self-acceptance, learning to ground herself in the reminder that her identity isn’t defined by a skin condition.
