Research Collaborations

The National Eczema Association partners with various research institutions, universities and government agencies to propel eczema research forward through collaborative projects.

There is so much that we do not understand about eczema and too much at stake to figure it all out alone. The National Eczema Association (NEA) partners with patient advocacy organizations, medical professionals, researchers, universities, government agencies, policymakers and drug manufacturers to advance eczema research and amplify the voice of the patient. Learn about some of our recent research collaborations below.

Eczema Counts

In 2022, NEA and the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA) received an Engagement Award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for a collaborative project on gamification to advance pediatric eczema care. This funding led to Eczema Counts, which ran through 2024.

The goal of Eczema Counts was to educate and connect eczema patients and researchers with the goal of advancing patient-centered outcomes research and comparative effectiveness research in the field of pediatric eczema.

Eczema Counts included two phases — the first was a series of three online games that led more than 300 participants through a series of challenges in pursuit of valuable knowledge while also having the chance to win great prizes. The second phase of Eczema Counts focused on an in-person meeting with patients to identify a high-priority research question for future eczema research.

More Than Skin Deep

In 2019, NEA partnered with four nonprofit organizations to host the first-ever patient-focused drug development meeting on the topic of eczema. This landmark meeting informed current and future developments of eczema therapies. Patients, caregivers and community members shared their experiences with eczema with representatives from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pharmaceutical researchers and drug developers. The initiative was called More Than Skin Deep.

The stories and experiences shared shed light on the urgent and unmet needs of adults and children who are affected by eczema. These conversations continue to drive advances in new therapies. Read NEA’s recap of the More Than Skin Deep meeting.
